- Innovative production method with laying and sealing system for wet room floorboards
- Fresh capital for further development and patenting in addition to setting up sales and production
Frühphasenfonds Brandenburg, launched by InvestitionsBank des Landes Brandenburg (ILB) on behalf of the Brandenburg Ministry of Economics and managed by bmp AG, has invested in hüma Parkettsystem GmbH together with two business angels.
The company, founded in November 2013 and based in Eberswalde, has set itself the mission of manufacturing a ready-to-lay genuine wood parquet system for damp and wet areas.
In production the critical seam area between the parquet elements will be fitted with a delicate sealing lip and a plastic-based snap-fastening to allow foolproof laying. When it has later been laid, the floorboards will be protected against penetrating water, and complicated laying systems such as tongue/groove or click connectors will be a thing of the past. The final thin layer of varnish lets the wood keep its natural feel and look in addition to being all-round water resistant.
As a result, this is a completely new type of parquet that can be used without any problems in areas such as bathrooms, kitchens or in catering.
Co-founder Manuel Mannheim explains: “Even the oceans were travelled with wooden ships. And that was only possible because the seams between the planks were carefully sealed. We are taking a definite stand against today’s all-pervasive scepticism towards wood in wet areas. Technically we are sufficiently advanced that we can dramatically reduce the investment risk and allow wood to be used hassle-free even in comfort areas like bathrooms.”
hüma is planning to use the funds raised to advance its technology, make headway with the patent process and set up sales and production. Further recruitment will also be needed for this.
Felix Hüllenkremer, founder of hüma Partkettsystem GmbH, explained: “With the help of the GO:INcubator, the EXIST start-up grant, financing from the ILB development programme‚ “Gründung innovativ” and the business angel loan, we have produced our first pre-production tool and can speak to established parquet marketing companies and manufacturers with a prototype. This response has shown that we can corner a real gap in the market with our product.”
Dr. Jan Alberti, investment manager at bmp, added: “Wood flooring is very popular in Germany, but has so far been used relatively little in damp and wet room areas. This is due to the costs and to any risks of water penetration. hüma’s system has various USPs here that have convinced us.”
